Eight
âMorning,â Matt muttered, his eyes still closed but his thumb making patterns on the bare skin above her hip. âQuestionâhow long have we been asleep? Whereâs my coffee? What time is it?â
DJ picked up his wrist, looked at his expensive timepiece and frowned. âYour watch has stopped.â
Matt cranked open one eye. âMy watch is one of the most iconic brands in the world, it doesnât stop.â
âWell, it says that itâs ten.â
Matt lifted his arm, squinted at the steel-blue face and nodded. âThatâs because it is ten. In the morning.â Matt resettled his arm across her waist, her breast in his hand, holding her close.
It took a moment for it to sink in that she was late, very late. âMatthew! I shouldâve been at work three hours ago!â
âNuh-uh. Apart from the fact that itâs Saturday, last night the twins gave you the day off. Remember?â His eyes remained closed but a satisfied smile crossed his face. âThey obviously suspected weâd need some time to recover.â He waited a beat. âThey werenât wrong.â
There wasnât anything she wanted more than to lie here with Mattâwell, maybe a cup of coffee came closeâbut she had checks to issue, orders to sign. Contracts to negotiate. And if she was being honest, she really wanted to put some distance between her and all those unwelcome feelings Matt pulled to the surface with his display of trust and his tender treatment of her.
DJ felt like heâd pushed the sharp end of a crowbar into a crack in her soul and was slowly prying her open to reveal the chaotic mess she was inside. She could sleep with him, but it was essential that she stopped confiding in him.
He was her lover who was leaving, not her friend.
She needed coffee. And an additional ten IQ points.
DJ wiggled out from under his arm and sat on the side of the bed. Seeing Mattâs long-sleeved shirt lying on the floor by her feet, she pulled it over her head before picking up her phone. She swiped the screen and saw that she had a few text messages on the group she and the twins used to communicate. Maybe there was a problem at the shop; they wanted her to come in; they needed her.
Her hopeful assumptions were way off base. Itâs nine thirty, guess you got some last night. Darbyâs message was accompanied by a few high fives and a thumbs-up.
Shop is quiet. Donât want to see you here was Julesâs contribution to the conversation.
Dammit. DJ looked over her shoulder to Matt, who was lying on his side, his head propped up on his hand. Jules felt her stomach flip over and heat rushed to that space between her legs. Sexy guy...
She pouted. âIâm not going to work. Iâve been banished.â
Mattâs mouth twitched with amusement. âIf I didnât have a healthy ego, Iâd feel insulted by your disappointed tone.â DJ felt his hand skim her hair. It was another tender gesture so DJ stood up and walked over to the window, pulling the drapes aside.
